Jean L. Gilbert, 93, of West Catasauqua, Whitehall, died May 30, 2021, in her home. She was the wife of the late Ray C. Gilbert for 63 years.

Born in Allentown, she was a daughter of the late Harold K. and Marguerite B. (McQuilken) Oswald.

She graduated from Whitehall High School in 1946 and Allentown Hospital School of Nursing in 1949.

She was a registered nurse at Allentown General Hospital until she left to raise her family. She later worked at Hilbert’s Pharmacy and Gifts until retiring. She was a mainstay at her family’s funeral home - Gilbert Funeral Home Inc.

She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Fullerton, where she sang on the choir and was a member of the prayer shawl committee.

She was a member of the Allentown Hospital Alumni Association, the former Whitehall Exchangettes Club and Whitehall Senior Citizens.

She got together with many of the other nurses in the Class of 1949 once a month for 67 years. She also attended many WHS class reunions.

She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl A. Sommer and her husband Dennis and Kathy J. Haggerty and her husband Jim; two granddaughters, Kylee and Delaney; a son, Jay; a sister-in-law, Dorothea Gilbert; cousins; and extended family.

Services will be private.
