Vivian, Zephyr softball ready for district playoffs
For Abby Vivian, the district playoffs represent another opportunity to play softball with her teammates, and that’s what she’s looking forward to the most as this week unfolds.
As a senior, she knows her time on the field with her fellow teammates will end this season, whenever they play their last game, and she just wants to soak it all in.
“I’m definitely going to enjoy it,” said Vivian.
After losing last year to the pandemic, and all the uncertainty surrounding this season, she’s grateful to spend more time with a close-knit group of players who are looking to claim a district title.
As a senior, she’s acutely aware of how fast it all went by, from that initial moment of stepping onto the field four years ago, to the final stages of postseason softball that commence this week.
“I’m just going to savor every moment I can,” she said.
Vivian, an outfielder, is a three-year varsity starter and has been an integral part of their success. She hits at the top of the lineup, usually second, and said that her job is to get on base so there power hitters can drive them in.
She said that process feeds on itself as the momentum builds throughout the lineup. She said all pushes back to the table setters who start the process over again.
Vivian said that her role isn’t limited to what she does at the dish. She can help in the field, on the base paths, wherever there’s an opportunity.
“I want to do whatever I can to help my team,” said Vivian.
She began playing softball when she was a 5-years-old. However, she really didn’t give the sport her undivided attention until she reached high school. That’s when she realized that she enjoyed playing the game. She had played soccer, and once she stepped onto the field her freshman season, she realized this was the right place to be. The coaching staff under the tutelage of Blake Morgan, and his assistant coaches, was also instrumental in fueling her passion.
“It was really fun, and I enjoyed the experience,” said Vivian.
While it’s a large senior class this season, Vivian is really happy with how the younger players have stepped up and contributed. For her, that will be one of the biggest takeaways from this season.
“They work extremely hard,” said Vivian. “I’m happy they’re enjoying the season. They helped with the success of this season.”
Last week’s loss to Northampton in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference semifinals stung, but she said they’re now focused on what lies ahead. They’ll be playing Stroudsburg on Thursday, after Press deadlines, in the first round, and Vivian said that the work has begun to get them ready to play.
She said that the coaches put them through drills as they try to get a little better every day. She said that attention to detail is the what drives their success on the field.
“It really shows off our hard work,” said Vivian. “That all goes back to doing things right in practice every day.”
Vivian is looking forward for the opportunity to extend her season. She wants it to last as long as possible.
“I’m not ready for it to be all over quite yet,” she said.
She said that the whole team feels that way and they’re ready to compete for a championship. She said the next few weeks will be important and they’re ready for the challenge.
Vivian said that she’ll be attending West Chester University in the fall where she’ll major in psychology. She said that she’ll be a full-time student and softball won’t be in her future at this time.
She said that her journey through her athletic life while at Whitehall has been made possible by the support of her parents. She said that they’ve done so much for her and sacrificed a lot to give her that student-athlete experience.
And now that could mean a district championship with her teammates.
“I owe it all to them,” said Vivian.
