BETHLEHEM AREA VOCATION TECHNICAL SCHOOL - Winners and leaders

BAVTS team members - Aidan Swenor, 11; Salum Asheem, 12; and Nicholas Randazzo, 12, all from Freedom HS - worked together to be selected district winners in the 2021 PA Media & Design Competition. The three worked as a team to create a logo and a media campaign presentation and will be competing virtually at the state level on May 27.

The team received perfect scores for the Conventions, Creativity, Graphic Design, Technical Elements and Relevance and 3 out of 4 for the actual Logo Design. Judges liked the mask on Ben Franklin, but felt the color scheme was a bit overwhelming, especially with the way the text linked together.

They all submitted logo concepts and then as a team came up with their final design.

The winning logo at the state level will be used to promote the 2022 PA Media and Design event.

The Bethlehem Rotary sponsored BAVTS students to attend an abbreviated leadership experience at Camp Neidig. The Rotary is interested and committed to the development of future leaders. Camp Neidig is normally a four-day, three-night leadership camp for juniors held in June with lots of interactive team activities and leadership presentations. They had to cancel last year’s camp and developed a modified one-day version of the program for 2021 open to juniors and seniors. The program was held May 1 and included:

• A morning virtual session with leadership presentations given by top leaders in their field.

• An afternoon session working on a community service project which took place on Bethlehem’s Sand Island.

Camp Neidig participants included Paige Sciarra, Christopher Frey, Dustin Lopez, Aidan Swenor, Alessandra Scipioni and Christina Cordero.

Bradlee Miller was selected as a semi-finalist for the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Vocational Scholarship Program. The program offers graduating high school seniors with vocational interests the opportunity to spend their 13th year abroad living with a German host family, participating in a training or school program and gaining work experience through internships with German companies.

Justin Yearwood was recognized May 4 at the SkillsUSA National Signing Day program that recognized an estimated 10,000 students across the country for their dedication to pursuing a career in residential construction, building trades and renovations, HVAC and plumbing and additional programs. Justin was one of 10 students from Pennsylvania recognized for their dedication to their field by demonstrating strong work ethic, leadership and the pursuit of passion. Justin, along with other Pennsylvania winners, received a $5,000 scholarship and an iPad. The event was sponsored by 84 Lumber.
