Snyder, Zephyrs fall short in quest for postseason

Matt Snyder didn’t deserve the fate he was dealt.

However, the senior righthander was just grateful for every opportunity this season.

“I was just glad to be out there every chance we had,” said Snyder. “We lost last season, and we were shut down part of this season.

“Every day was a new day. We couldn’t look back whether we won or lost. It always came down to the next game.”

Snyder, who is headed to Moravian College to play next season, finished with an overall 3-4 record and had 42 strikeouts in 41 innings over his seven starts.

However, Snyder was the victim of a lack of run support, as his Zephyr teammates provided him with just five runs in his four losses.

Whitehall was in position to secure a playoff spot in the district Class 6A bracket when they ended the year with a six-game losing streak that dropped them to 8-12 overall.

Zephyrs’ head coach Shaun O’Boyle has appreciated Snyder’s efforts despite his team’s offensive troubles.

“We needed to win one of our last five and we scored four runs total,” said O’Boyle. “You can’t win like that.

“Matt pitched two of those games and gave us every opportunity to win. That’s how he’s been for three years.”

Snyder started paying at the age of four, and the game has been a constant in his life. He pitched and played the infield and outfield in his younger days, and began to concentrate on pitching when he was 13.

From there, he began to develop his repertoire.

“I started to gain more and more confidence,” he stated. “I have been throwing a fastball, curveball, and changeup. I have been able to get my velocity up, and I feel really satisfied with everything.

“When I first came up to variety in my freshman year, it was a good fit for me because we were a young team. I got a chance to get some innings.

“Now, I feel like I am ready for college.”

Snyder will pursue a degree in sports management with the emphasis on business. He feels indebted to all of his coaches for their support over the years.

He feels ready to take the next step.

“I feel like everything has come together for me,” he said. “Last year was kind of tough. I couldn’t imagine what it would have been like if I didn’t have my senior year.

“It would have been nice to get to districts, but I enjoyed this season.”
