Catty earns district berth

Catasauqua baseball is headed back to the District 11 playoffs.

For the first time since 2017, the Rough Riders will participate in the postseason tournament. In that year, the seventh-seeded Roughies were blanked, 8-0, by second-seeded and eventual champion Tamaqua.

This year, the Roughies clinched a spot in their 19-6 victory over Moravian Academy May 11 that gave them their ninth win of the season. They followed with a 8-4 loss to Wilson and finished the year with a 14-5 victory over Lehighton that gave them an overall 10-10 mark for the campaign.

“This is great for the team,” said head coach Steve Bradley. “We are a young team, so this is pretty impressive for us to achieve this mark.”

In the win over Lehighton, McKay Lewis went six strong innings, giving up two runs on five hits over 102 pitches. He raised his overall record to 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA.

“He has pitched well,” said Bradley about Lewis. “He has developed into a nice starter for us, and he throws strikes. That’s the key.

“He is a big part of our rotation now, and he will be for our future.”

Brandon Jenny is tied with Lewis for most victories with his 3-3, 3.63 mark with 44 strikeouts in 34 innings.

Cole Schiffer leads the team with a .390 batting average with a team-high 20 hits. Hunter Reitz leads in RBIs with 17.

The Roughies currently are seeded fifth in the District 11 Class 3A bracket, and they could likely open at second-seeded Panther Valley (16-4) on Monday, March 24.
