Council votes to approve Uptown Northampton Street Fair
During the May 6 meeting, Northampton Borough Council voted to approve the Northampton Area Chamber of Commerce Uptown Northampton Street Fair for 11 a.m.-4 p.m. May 22.
Chamber organizers asked to close Main Street between East 17th and 21st streets from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the event. They also requested the borough’s portable bandshell and toilet, with reimbursement for a borough employee to monitor the generator required for the portable toilet.
In other business at the meeting, the board decided to table the effort to create a study committee for the proposed stormwater management fee, due to the absence of several board members.
Council discussed two accessible parking spots, and approval is expected at the May 20 council meeting.
Northampton Police Chief Bryan Kadingo requested permission to send an officer to attend the FBI-Law Enforcement Executive Development Association’s executive development training. The cost is $695. The training is held at the Lehigh Township Police Department.
Affordable Pet Center, 2022 Main St., was planning a 15th anniversary celebration for May 15 and requested permission from council to limit parking in the municipal lot adjacent to its store.
The Greater Lehigh Valley Nazareth Chamber of Commerce asked council to allow the use of the borough’s portable bandshell for its annual food truck festival, planned for June 19.
Chamber organizers said they would provide a certificate of insurance and reimburse the fee for delivery and retrieval by Northampton street department staff.
The Northampton Exchange Club proposed changing its sponsored Jack Frost Parade from Oct. 21 to 6 p.m. Oct. 23, with a rain date set for 6 p.m. Oct. 30.
The borough is considering hiring a number of summer employees for the road crew and the pool. It is expected the pool will have sufficient lifeguards and bath house and cashier staff to allow the pool to open for the 2021 season. The tentative opening date is June 5.

Brobst noted delinquent notices were sent to all property owners who have not paid their garbage bill. They have 30 days to make payment or Portnoff Law Associates will pursue payment.
Brobst also noted vandalism is up in the borough as in other communities. This tends to occur as the weather warms. It is urged if a resident “sees something, say something” by calling the police nonemergency number at 610-261-0404.
The borough will receive $60,000 from Northampton County to install dash cameras in the police cars.
