Coplay OKs pool manager, staff hirings

At the May 11 Coplay Borough Council meeting, council members unanimously approved the hiring of Parkway Pool manager Tiffany Benson for the 2021 season.

Approval was also granted to hire seven lifeguards and five employees to handle pool admissions for the summer of 2021.

Councilman Stephen Burker noted since the pandemic restrictions have been adjusted regarding capacity limits, the motion to approve nonresident daily pool passes at the rate of $12, with no season passes offered, would be tabled until June 1. By doing this, the topic can be reviewed and revisited since regulations have changed since the original discussion.

A motion was made by Councilman Charles Sodl to approve a Whitehall-Coplay storage facility that will be located at the corner of Fifth and Hokendauqua streets.

The owner of the facility, Gene Dieter, noted the permanent name of the facility has not yet been decided. Council members unanimously approved this motion.

Council also gave unanimous approval to hire an additional full-time police officer in the borough.

The approval was given by council for Resolution 1477 authorizing the submission of a Greenways Trails and Recreation program funding request to the Commonwealth Financing Authority. This approval also includes designating a borough official to execute all documents and agreements in connection with the requested grant.

Councilwoman Janet Eisenhauer mentioned several projects done at Coplay Public Library earlier this month, including cosmetic changes and the purchase of iPads, were completed using money from past grants received from the Harry Trexler Foundation.

The grant money received this year will be invested in technology and will help balance the library budget.

Unfortunately, the internship being offered at the library did not have any applicants. Eisenhauer explained the same internship will be available next year, and she and Councilman Richard Kern plan to visit local colleges in the fall to advertise and inform students of the opportunity.

Council President Louis Bodish reported the borough office and public works department will be closed May 31 for the Memorial Day holiday.
