PHS shuts out Hornets twice
The Emmaus High School baseball team’s batters will be happy to not have to face Parkland High School pitching again for a little bit.
The Hornets were shut out 4-0 against the Trojans last Tuesday at Church Lane, then were unable to muster up any runs two nights later, falling to Parkland 10-0 in five innings in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference gamer at Parkland High School.
Even after the latest of two consecutive setbacks to rival Parkland, Emmaus head coach Jeremy Haas is confident his team can regroup and has plenty of time to turn things back around.
“We are at the halfway point in our season sitting at 7-3 (5-2 in conference),” said Haas. “Considering we didn’t have a preseason, had COVID shutdowns and a wide array of injuries, I like where we are at. We have a big week in front of us and we need to be prepared for each challenge we have going forward. We have nine games in 13 days which will make or break our season.”
The Emmaus lineup had four hits in Thursday’s game, one each from Jaden Gallagher, Andrew O’Brien, Tyler LePage and Colin Foley. Gallagher and Foley hit doubles. Gallagher also started the game on the mound, throwing 2.1 innings, allowing an earned run.
The Trojans (10-1, 9-0) broke the game open in back-to-back innings, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third and six in the fourth. They had consecutive RBI doubles by Blake Barthol and Luke Meehan and then had a two-run single by Bryce Ratliff as the Trojan bats went on fire in those two innings after previously only scoring four runs in the first game.
“We weren’t able to execute on the mound and in the field,” Haas said. “We weren’t able to execute offensively and we need to be able to find more hits.”
Haas isn’t too worried about his team’s mentality after the recent games with Parkland. They just need to get back out there and play.
“Our guys don’t need a bounce back necessarily,” said Haas. “They just need to go out and play their game. We don’t need to press or play any different than they know how to already.”
Emmaus will have plenty of opportunities to get the sour taste out of their mouths as they will play a number of games before the regular season finale on May 10. This week, the Green Hornets play five games in six days starting Monday of this week. Next week they’ll play another four games in five days, including Tuesday’s match up with undefeated Liberty at Church Lane.
