LePage’s late hit helps EHS beat Blue Mountain
Trailing 4-2 in the seventh inning, the Emmaus High School baseball team needed to muster up some runs if it was going to beat Blue Mountain Saturday at Church Lane.
Tyler LePage delivered in the clutch.
With two runners on base, LePage doubled them in to tie the game at 4-4 and then came around to score the winning run, helping the Green Hornets defeat the Eagles 5-4 in a nonconference game. The victory helped the Hornets bounce back from a loss to Bethlehem Catholic three days earlier.
“It was nice to get back in the win column against a quality opponent,” said head coach Jeremy Haas. “We are still not playing our best baseball right now, so finding wins while we clean some things up is a good thing.”
Jaden Gallagher started the game on the mound for Emmaus (11-4 overall, 8-3 EPC). Gallagher lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out eight. Andrew O’Brien earned the victory for the Green Hornets, surrendering two runs on one hit over two and a third innings, striking out one.
Haas liked what he saw at the plate from his team in the pivotal seventh inning. Emmaus almost doubled its total hits for the game (six) in the seventh, bringing around three runs to walk off winners.
“Our guys kept it simple and took quality at bats,” Haas said. “When we are able to focus on the task at hand, we are much more successful. Our winning run scored on a mistake by their catcher, but we will take it.”
LePage finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate and had a team-high three RBIs.
“Consistency,” said Haas when asked about LePage. “He is consistent with his approach every single day. Whether it’s practice, scrimmage or game, he is prepared to take a good at bat. His success is a result of preparing to be great.”
Dominick Chiego had one hit and added an RBI. Anthony Viola tallied one hit and scored two runs, while both Blake Schantz and Evan Amey had one hit and one run scored each.
The Green Hornets had a similar style victory in their next game, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning to leave Pocono Mountain East winners, 7-4, on Monday.
Emmaus wraps up a busy week of action with games against East Stroudsburg North on Thursday, Whitehall on Friday, followed by Nazareth on Saturday.
