Girls Lacrosse bounces back to defeat Nazareth
Resilience is something that the Parkland High School girls lacrosse team has shown this season. The Trojans respond to adversity and have never lost two games in a row, always fighting back after defeat.
Following a 12-11 loss to Pleasant Valley last Saturday afternoon, Parkland was on the winning end of a 14-10 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Nazareth this past Monday.
Trojan head coach Dawn Cipolla is pleased with how her team has been answering the bell and getting wins, but she knows it can play better.
“It was great to get a win but we still need to make less mistakes,” Cipolla said. “It was great to see different people contributing in the attack zone. This helps us be more of a threat.”
It is a younger, more inexperienced team this year. There are six seniors, some of which have not played many minutes on the varsity level. The team is beginning to find its identity and beginning to play together.
“I think we are starting to find our roles on the team and taking advantage of them,” said Cipolla. “We need to continue to grow in those roles now and it will help gel as a unit.”
The Trojans (5-3 overall, 3-2 EPC) had six different goal scorers against the Blue Eagles (2-5, 1-4), led by Sophie Marcotte with a game-high five goals.
“Sophie took charge and meant business,” said Cipolla. “She is becoming more comfortable and confident as a leader on offense. She is a positive team player and leads by example.”
Maeve Leonzi finished with four goals and one assist against Nazareth. Nikki Boyer tallied two goals and Gigi Leonzi, Jess Brey and Hannah Car all had one goal each.
Balanced scoring is always a plus for a team, but Cipolla made sure to give credit to her defense and the way they have been playing. Senior goalie Katey Kunz, in her first full season starting, finished with eight saves in net.
“The defense is working great together,” Cipolla said. “They made so many stops to keep us in the game. We were also missing Morgan Napolatano, who starts on our defense. Darby Reyburn had her first varsity start and contributed successfully to the team. Katey Kunz is playing out of her mind. This is her first full season playing lacrosse in goal. I couldn’t ask from more from her. She brings an energy to the team that everyone feeds off of.”
Parkland followed that game with a 23-0 shutout over Bethlehem Catholic the following day. The Trojans host Saucon Valley on Thursday to close out the week of action.
