Boys tennis enters postseason
The 2021 Emmaus boys tennis program ended its 2021 regular season with an 11-3 overall record, a 10-1 conference mark and a had a good overall experience in last Friday’s Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Championship Tournament.
“The regular season was very successful,” said Emmaus head coach Fred Saab. “Our only losses coming from Parkland twice and a close 3-2 loss to Southern Lehigh, I was pleased with the outstanding play of the singles players and how the doubles players were able to adapt throughout the season.”
Saab has no disappointments as his team prepares for its final chapter - District 11 Class 3A championship play. But his team would like to do something about those regular season losses to their rival.
“As a whole, I think being shut out both times by Parkland is something our team would like to change and will have a chance to in the postseason,” said Saab.
In the EPC tournament, number one singles player Quinn Erk won his quarterfinal match against Nazareth’s Alex Rodriguez, but could not get by Stroudsburg’s John Willis in the semis.
In the number two singles bracket, Emmaus’s Eddy Chow also won his quarterfinal match, beating Stroudsburg’s Jake Hoffman. Chow fell to Liberty’s Shayaan Farhad in the semifinals, but won the number-two singles consolation for third place in his bracket.
Number three singles player Aidan Springs was unable to earn a victory in the tournament, losing to Stroudsburg’s Jackson Kozma.
The Hornets’ number two doubles team of Nic Gilboy and Gabe Huff were unable to produce a victory, although Saab loves their games.
“Nic has a good all-around game, with powerful ground strokes, while Gabe has a strong presence and react at net, along with a strong forehand,” the coach said.
Number three doubles teammates Rohan Desai and Ansh Malik were also unable to taste victory, but number four doubles team Gavin Coleman and Johnson Yang did, winning their quarterfinal match.
Saab wants to see what his team can do in District 11 Class 3A postseason. The district singles tournament began this week. The team championships start next Monday and Emmaus will likely be the No. 4 seed with a home match against No. 5 Freedom. The district doubles tournament follows on May 10-12.
“The postseason means the culmination of all the season’s hard work,” Saab said. “I am stressing to leave everything you have on the court in the postseason.”
Erk earned the No. 2 seed for this week’s District 11 singles championship, while Chow will play as one of eight singles players in the 16-player Class 3A bracket.
“With Quinn Erk being the number two seed (in District 11 play) and Eddy Chow being in the tournament, I have strong expectations they will do well.”
