Balanced effort leads Parkland girls to win over Emmaus

The Parkland girls track and field team gained confidence in its postseason prospects after an impressive 92-58 victory over Lehigh Division rival Emmaus last Wednesday at Parkland High School.

The win kept the Trojans undefeated at 4-0 and showed the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference they have the depth and talent to compete for a league title.

“Our balance as a team is so important,” said head coach Stephen Ott. “We have a number of top athletes across each of the different areas.”

One of those top athletes is jumper Grace Nation. Against Emmaus, she took first place in the long jump (16-feet, 11-inches) and triple jump (36-feet, 10 inches). Thrower Sonya Shivok has been solid all season and against Emmaus she finished second in the shot put, third in the discus and second in the javelin.

One of the best performances belonged to sprinter Naeema Salau, who won the 100-meter dash in 12.4 and took the 200 in 26.5. Salau’s teammate Lana Hurwitz won the 1600 by five seconds over Emmaus’s Clara Kennedy.

In the relays the Trojans looked particularly strong. Ivy Dias, Aleigha Rodenbaugh, Melanie Lowe and Salau won the 4x100 relay by 4.6 seconds over their rivals. Lauren Williams, Emily Beers, Madison Seed and Ava Bendetti were another relay squad who took first in the 4x800.

Parkland’s Madeleine Battista won the high jump over teammate Meghan Haines, while Coral Shivok easily claimed top honors in the pole vault. Mikayla-Anne Woodring won the shot put and Chole Chase won the javelin throw.

“Our goal was to finish the dual meet schedule undefeated and carry that momentum into the postseason,” said Ott.
