NHS track was eager for EPC meet

Northampton head track and field coach Tim Caffrey liked his team’s chances at the East Penn Conference championship at East Stroudsburg South High School Monday afternoon, after Press deadlines.

The Konkrete Kids sent 23 girls and 24 boys to compete in the event from their 86-member squad. Northampton finished their dual meet season with a 3-3 record.

“That is a great achievement,” noted Caffrey about the number of athletes sent to the meet. “It is a recognition of all the hard work put in among the members of the team to gain participation in postseason play.”

“It is our goal to better their time/distance/height in the league meet to improve their PRs (personal records).”

Kelly Tita is the highest seeded in the 100 and 200. She is sixth in the 100 (12.6), and 11th in the 200 (27.4).

Danika Cuchran is third in the 110 hurdles (15.8) and 12th in the 300 (50.6). Leah Jenkins is sixth in the 110 hurdles (16.2), and she also is seventh in the high jump (4-11) and 16th in the long jump (15-6). She also is ninth in the triple jump (33-2.5).

Amber Poniktera will begin sixth in the 800 and seventh in the 1,600. Raine Korpics is seeded 11th in the 400 (1.02.6), Burkit Serenity is seeded 12th in the 3,200 (12:42.8), and Reia Sandberg is fourth in the javelin (117-4.)

The Kids’ 4X1 00 relay is ninth (53.0); the 4x 400, sixth (4:21.3), and the 4X 800, fifth, (10:35).

On the boys’ side, Ben Henry is expected to have a strong meet. He is seventh in the 100 (11.0), sixth in the 200 (22.5), and second in the 400 (51.8)

Shaun Apsley is 18th in the 110 hurdles (16.8) and second in the 300 hurdles (40.1). He also is 23rd in the triple jump (38.1).

Owen Nahf should be in the mix, as he is fifth in the 1,600 (4:37.7) and third in the 3,200 (10:16.8). Wyatt Poniktera is 13th in the 800 (2:07.3).

Cliff Bastow is third in the pole vault (12-3), and Logan Henry is 10th in the long jump (20-6). Tyler Klucsarits is 13th in the discus (118-02) and 17th in the javelin (127-1)

The Kids’ 4 X 100 relay team has had a good year (fourth, 44.3), as well 4 X 400 team (second, 3:32,2), and the 4X800 squad (sixth, 8:48.)

Caffrey understands the potential pitfalls ahead. The upcoming district meet is at Blue Mountain High School May 18.

“It makes it more challenging to earn a spot in the District meet,” said Caffrey. “We hope to qualify many of the kids for that meet also.”
