Whitehall’s Makenzie Laub’s double that rolled into the left field corner resulted in three runs scored by Abby Vivian, Lindsey Gawrys, and Laub in the first inning to give the Zephyrs an early lead in their 6-0 victory over Bethlehem Catholic on Friday night at Pates Park.
“We took a couple steps backward the last couple days,” said Becahi coach Rich Mazza. “We lost to East Stroudsburg South the other day. We were doing so well. We hit the ball hard and it was right at people, but that’s the game.”
Becahi’s Jayden Spigner hit a two-out triple to deep left in the top of the first but was left stranded.
Whitehall scored its fourth run on a sacrifice fly by Gawrys in the third inning, and Maddie Cunningham scored on an error in the fourth after hitting a triple.
The Golden Hawks went down one, two, three in the fourth and fifth innings, and the Zephyrs tallied its sixth run in the sixth inning.
“They hit the ball well, and there was no question they we’re the better team tonight,” Coach Mazza said.
Becahi’s Ashley Judd led off the top of the seventh with a base hit, and Teighan Boyle reached first base on an infield error, but neither could score.
The good news is that the Hawks qualified for districts early last week.
We’re excited about that,” said Mazza. “If we’d have won [against East Stroudsburg South], we’d have probably made the league playoffs, but we lost, and now this. But we have some time and we’ll take it easy a little bit and then we’ll get rolling.”
