Liberty, Freedom seniors earn Moravian scholarships
Two graduating seniors from Freedom and Liberty high schools received four-year, full-tuition scholarships to Moravian College during the 2021 BASD Superintendent’s Scholarship Program Award Ceremony.
During the April 26 outdoor ceremony at Moravian, college President Dr. Bryon L. Grigsby and BASD Superintendent Dr. Joseph Roy, announced that Jakelyn Valenzuela from Liberty HS and Giselle Ponce from Freedom HS have each received a 2021 BASD Superintendent’s Scholarship to Moravian College.
Ponce said she is looking forward to attending Moravian, where she will major in biology. “It has everything I wanted in a college,” she said. “I can give back to my community. It’s close to home.”
Ponce said she looks forward to getting involved in a lot of activities at Moravian. She was in band, soccer, National Honor Society and cancer crushers at Freedom. “I’m grateful for the opportunity given to me,” she said.
Valzuela said she is looking forward to “the whole experience” when she attends Moravian. “I want to participate, do everything,” she said. She will major in graphic design. She said she was attracted to Moravian by the college’s many programs. She said she had good teachers, in particular Mr Michael Reenock and Ms. Lauren Ackerman.
Grigsby said, “We’re really proud to be able to present these scholarships to students who show amazing potential.”
Roy said the scholarship program is in its sixth year of benefitting “students who have been able to be successful and demonstrated that they will be great contributors and a major plus asset to Moravian.”
