LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Baseball eyes berth

Whitehall head baseball coach Shaun O’Boyle has been pleased with the way his team has played recently, but he knows they are missing one key component in the hunt for a postseason spot.

“We need a signature win,” he said. “We need to beat a good team, and get a good win. We have been facing good pitchers, and we’ll face good pitchers in the playoffs.”

The Zephyrs suffered a 3-0 loss at Stroudsburg Tuesday as they managed just two hits. With the loss, they fell to 8-7 overall and needed one win over their final three to earn a district spot.

Matt Snyder went 5 2/3 innings on 105 pitches with five strikeouts and three walks. Sam Castillo finished for the Zephyrs. Snyder has a 1-1 record with 31 strikeouts in 27.2 innings with a 1.26 ERA.

Whitehall had a day off Wednesday ending a streak of five games in six days.

“You don’t win too many games with just two hits,” said O’Boyle. “We had been playing well.

“We faced their best pitcher, and these are the types of pitchers we’re going to see from here on out. We have to be able to make some adjustments. Matt Snyder did what we asked him to do. He threw well enough to get a win. We just didn’t hit.

“We faced good pitchers when we played Freedom and Liberty, and we couldn’t get it done.”

O’Boyle planned to have his team workout Wednesday before they play the first of three remaining home games against Nazareth Thursday.

Owen Fischl leads the Zephyrs in hitting at .381 and RBIs with 17. Gabe Guzy is hitting .324 and Bryce Bashore is hitting .310 with the team having a .287 clip. Dylan Carfara has 15 RBIs.

“We only have had two days of practice over the past two weeks,” said O’Boyle. “It’s hard to work on things when you’re playing nearly every day.

“We’ll get a day in and get back at it.”
