The 93rd Academy Awards were predictable in their predictability.

“Nomadland” led the winners, receiving three Oscars of six nominations.

In the seven categories of the Lehigh Valley Press Focus annual “Readers Pick the Oscar Winners Contest,” The Oscar goes to:

Best Picture: “Nomadland”

Best Director: Chloe Zhao, “Nomadland”

Best Actress: Frances McDormand, “Nomadland.”

Best Actor, Anthony Hopkins: “The Father”

Best Supporting Actress: Youn Yuh-jung, “Minari”

Amanda Seyfried, an Allentown native and William Allen High School graduate, was nominated as best supporting actress for her portrayal of Marion Davies in “Mank,” which led the nominations with 10, but only received two Oscars for Production Design and Cinematography.

Ann Roth of Pen Argyl received the Oscar for Best Costume Design for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” which received five nominations, winning two, including makeup and hairstyling. At age 89, Roth is said to be oldest Oscar winner in the category.

Speaking of fashion, Seyfried got a shout-out for her gown during the post-Oscars show commentary on “Live From E,” when it was said that Seyfried “shut down the red carpet.” Seyfried wore a red Armani Priveé gown of plissé tulle with ruffles and a plunging neckline.

Sir Anthony Hopkins, 83, was the upset winner as best actor for “The Father,” which received six nominations and received two Oscars (including best adapted screenplay), over the actor favored to win, the late Chadwick Boseman for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”

The 93rd Oscars stumped the dozens who entered the “Readers Pick the Oscar Winners” contest.

The categories that tripped up many on the red carpet were the lead actor category, where Chadwick Boseman for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and the lead actress category, where Viola Davis for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” were the picks of many contest entrants.

Entrants went for the “hometown girl,” Amanda Seyfried.

Several entrants correctly picked five recipients in the seven categories. No entrant correctly chose six recipients or seven recipients.

Gordon Reese of Allentown had the earliest entry, which was received March 27, of those who picked five of the seven categories in the contest.

Reese incorrectly picked Amanda Seyfried for supporting actress and Carey Mulligan for actress, He correctly chose Anthony Hopkins, Daniel Kaluuya, Chloe Zhao, “Nomadland” and “Soul.”

I correctly picked four of the seven categories: Anthony Hopkins, Daniel Kaluuya, Chloe Zhao, and “Soul.” I incorrectly picked Carey Mulligan, Amanda Seyfried and “Minari.”
