Softball piling up the runs
The Northampton softball juggernaut continued its march through the EPC with a 12-2, 5-inning win over Easton on Tuesday.
The K-Kids have won 7 straight to push their record on the season to 12-1. Over their winning streak they have outscored their foes 74-10.
Northampton jumped on the Rovers early.
Taylor Kranzley stroked a two-out single and advanced to second when Kate Stuhldreher drew a walk. Kranzley raced home on an error by the Easton shortstop to draw first blood. Devyn Demchak then slugged a 1-1 pitch over the right-centerfield fence to give the Kids a 4-0 lead.
In the third inning, Demchak launched a 1-0 pitch over the left-centerfield field fence to extend the lead to 5-0. Rilee Ehrlacher then drove home Ryley Stanchock with a bases-loaded sac fly. Kendyll Strohl followed that up with a triple to drive in two more and make the score 8-0.
In the fourth, Kate Stuhledreher led off with a double. The Rovers wanted no part of pitching to Demchak and gave her an intentional free pass to first base. Lily Stuhldreher drove in her sister with a double to right. Ashley Patterson drove in two more with a double to center to put the K-Kids up 11-0.
Easton avoided a shutout by posting 2 runs in the top of the fifth. However, they could only delay the invocation of the mercy rule by half an inning. Kate Stuhldreher smacked an 0-2 pitch up the middle to drive in Kranzley from second and end the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Kaela Edelman pitched all 5 innings with one strikeout and no walks to pick up the win. She spoke about the impact of the chemistry with batterymate Jessie Hunt on her success.
“It’s really important,” she said. “Me and Jessie have been playing together since our sophomore year. We work really well together. She calls my pitches. She knows what I’m comfortable throwing.”
Hunt, a senior, had the daunting task of replacing a three-year starter, Maddie Fraley, at catcher. She has performed well both behind the plate and with the bat. She explained how that came to fruition.
“I had all my teammates come together, all my coaches,” she said. “They really pushed me to show that I deserved to be in that spot and that I can do it.”
With two weeks left in the regular season, Northampton sits atop the standings in both the EPC and the District XI 6A power rankings. The team’s upcoming games are a road trip to Stroudsburg on Friday and a Senior Night celebration on Tuesday when the K-Kids host Dieruff. A showdown with Parkland is on the slate for next Thursday in the penultimate game of the regular season.
