Whitehall track sweeps Dieruff
Both the boys and girls track teams got to the finish line with Ws against Dieruff to kick off the 2021 spring season.
The boys defeated the Huskies 78-68, while the girls won 85-53.
The meet produced a lot of first-place finishes for the Zephyrs. One of those came courtesy of senior Lindsay Solderitch who was tops in the 400 with a 1:02.8 mark. Solderitch didn’t stop there, winning the 800 in 2:50.6. In fact, the girls swept the 800 with Sophia Mrazik finishing second (3:04.5) and Brianna Uhnak finishing third in 3:10.6
Mikayla Warren finished first in the mile, crossing the line in 6:21, while also besting the field in the 3,200 with a 14:30 mark.
In the 100 meter hurdles, Mariele Patungan led the pack with an 18.6 mark. She also finished second in the 300 hurdles, crossing the line in 54.2
Whitehall swept the pole vault with Arizona Markovits finishing first with a 8-06 mark. Tessa Hopkins was second, clearing the bar at 6-00.
Toni Jones was a force in the throws, finishing first in the shot put (26-06.75) and discus (83-10).
Head coach Tyler Miller said that Jones is beginning to showcase what she can do in the throwing events.
“Toni’s is getting better each day, and can’t wait to see what she does next couple weeks when it finally starts warming up for us,” said Miller.
In the javelin, Delaney Sullivan was tops with a 70-11 toss, while Jones finished second with a 68-06 mark.
Other notable girls performances include Aspen Schache’s second-place finish in the 100, crossing the line in 13.9; the girls 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams who both took first; Maisey Hartman’s second place finish in the triple jump (28-05.50), and Ella Hadersbeck’s second place finish in the mile with an 8:34 mark.
The boys also had their share of firsts starting with Sean Connolly in the 800. He topped the field with a 2:13.7 mark. They swept that event with Christian Foehrkolb finishing second (2:21.2), while Austin Hedrick was third (2:25.2).
Foehrkolb also took first place in the mile, hitting the tape in 5:18.7, while Hedrick was tops in the 3,200, finishing in 13:07.8.
In the high jump, senior Andy Magarin earned the top points with a 5-06 leap, while also winning the long jump with a 18-11.50 mark.
The triple jump was won by Ian Thomas who had a winning mark of 37-10, while Magarin took second with a 36-07.25 mark.
Gregory Sommer was the winner in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 8-06 for the Zephs.
Junior Aiden Tacker put his start on the throws, winning the shot put with a 40-10.25 toss, while also leading the field in the discus with a 101-10.50 mark.
Other notable performances for the boys include Peter Busch and Jacob Busch who were second and third, respectively, in the 400 meter dash with Peter edging out Jacob by a tenth-of-a-second, 55.5 to 55.6. The brothers were also second and third in the 110 meter hurdles with Peter finishing in 19.5, wile Jacob crossed in 21.2.
Additionally, Niko Nomura finished third in the 100 at 11.9; Brenden Sargent was third in the mile with a 5:38.7 mark, and Jeffrey Warren was second in the 3,200 at 13:16.6.
Miller said it was a hard-fought victory. The Huskies were dominant in the shorter distance races, but the Zephyrs were able to overcome that in a few other events, notably the mile and two mile.
“[It] was a tough meet, but we were able to win both. Dieruff took the sprints but we took the distance races which kept the meets close,” said Miller.
