BC gets win over LHS
Bethlehem Catholic catcher Teighan Boyle led off the sixth inning with a home run, and with two outs in the same inning, hit another homer in the Golden Hawks’ 9-1 victory over Liberty on Friday at Becahi.
“It feels good, finally, to put it all together and start hitting good,” said Boyle. “It was a first pitch change-up. She just put it right there for me, and I hit it hard.”
Becahi third baseman Angie Iovino followed up with a base hit, and first baseman Francesca Oberholzer laid down a perfect bunt.
“I wasn’t hitting well, so I think it was a good idea that [Coach Mazza] called me to bunt, and when the first strike went by, I was like, oh no, I missed it. I better get the next one,” Oberholzer said, “so when I found the next strike, I was like, this is the one, and it went perfectly down the third base line.”
Second baseman Jordan Merklin reached first on an error, and center fielder Jaden Spigner cleared the bases with a double that was hit down the third base line.
“The first two pitches were balls, so I knew she was going to have to come over the plate. It was an inside pitch, and those are my favorite, so I swung right at it,” Spigner said. “It was a whole team effort, and I think we needed that push.”
Right fielder Ashley Judd walked, and left fielder Adrianna Truss was safe at first on a fielder’s choice, but so was Spigner at third. Designated player Kristal Torres hit a sacrifice fly that scored Spigner, and Boyle hit her second homer of the inning over the right field fence.
“She pitched me a strike on the outside corner, and I like the outside corner, and then the next pitch she threw was the same pitch, and I was locked in on it, and I hit it hard again,” Boyle said. “I was excited. I’m just glad we could get the win today because we were struggling in the beginning.”
Liberty had a 1-0 lead until the fifth inning when Merklin tied it, scoring on an RBI single to left field by Truss.
“It was an inside pitch, and I kind of stood back and did what I had to do,” said Truss. “It kind of came in my head about [Coach Mazza] telling me what I have to do in order to hit the way I want to hit. It actually felt pretty good.”
Emma Bond was the Hawks’ winning pitcher on Friday and last Wednesday in Becahi’s 2-1 victory against the Hurricanes at Liberty.
“We relied a lot on defense for both games,” Bond said. “I was kind of concerned because we weren’t getting good at bats, but then the sixth inning we came and scored a lot of runs.”
In assessing the difference between the two games, Becahi coach Rich Mazza spoke to the fact that the Hawks are a team with a lot of newcomers.
“[Liberty] made big plays [on Wednesday],” said Mazza. “You try to cover every situation, but things come up in a game that you didn’t talk about, or you talk about one day, but they try hard, they’re good kids, they didn’t give up, and they keep fighting.”
