Baseball searches for consistent play
Consistency.
It’s the element Northampton’s baseball team has been seeking throughout the season.
The Konkrete Kids (2-5) hosted undefeated Liberty (7-0) Tuesday , after Press deadlines, for its Senior Night after dropping recent games to Freedom (5-4) and Easton (6-2), and head coach Mick Sugra has continued to search for answers.
“It’s about what we talked about earlier,” he stressed. “On paper, we’re not as strong as we have been in the past.
“Consistency has been the hardest part for us. We haven’t out a complete game together yet with solid defense, solid hitting, and solid pitching.”
At Freedom, the Kids had a 4-1 lead after four innings. However, Freedom rallied for a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth, and the Patriots took advantage of the Kids’ six errors on the day. Joe Kerbacher had two hits for the Kids.
Against Easton, the Kids jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but Easton responded with three in the third off starter Cam Fisher. The Red Rovers added three more in the fifth to close out the game.
“Fisher was effective early, and then he got behind in the count,” noted Sugra. “We had runners at second and third in the first, but we couldn’t get them in. We could have set the tone there. We had the same type of situation against Freedom.
“We couldn’t continue it.”
Before their losses to Freedom and Easton, the Kids had posted a pair of impressive wins over the same teams, settling some early pitching issues.
But their bats have been relatively quiet most of the season as they entered Tuesday’s contest with a team average of .211.
Senior Will Erie leads with a .333 clip and freshman Logan Higgins is at .294. Sugra expects sophomore shortstop Vincent Santostefano to return to practice Wednesday after he had to quarantine due to COVID exposure.
Despite their inconsistencies, Sugra has an optimistic outlook.
“Some of the plays I have seen have been mind blowing,” he stated. “I’m at a loss for words sometimes because we have long, structured practices.
“But their spirits are high and the team chemistry is there. We have potential and talent. We just have to figure it out.”
