Baseball gets a win

The Whitehall baseball team is hoping a big victory over Dieruff on Tuesday is just what they needed.

The Zephs 10-runned the Huskies in a 5-inning game to the tune of 10-0.

“Yesterday was much better,” said head coach Shaun O’Boyle. “We opened the season with some tough games and just didn’t play a complete game. We were making mistakes we normally don’t make. Very correctable.”

The team opened the season with Parkland twice, Daniel Boone and Central Catholic.

“We’ve missed on a lot of opportunities with guys on base,” said O’Boyle. “We have to get better at that.”

Against the Huskies, Bryce Bashore certainly got things going at the top of the order batting 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Owen Fischl had two hits, a walk and an RBI batting third and Gabriel Guzy, the DH, was 2-for-2 with a run and three RBIs. One of his hits was a double. Connor Foster and Dylan Carfara also had two hits in the win.

“Owen Fischl has been our big run producer with 8 RBIs,” said O’Boyle. “He’s hitting .400 with .529 OBP and 8 RBI. All first on the team.

“That’s a credit to the top of our lineup with Bashore and Ayden Dunbar both are getting on base over 50-percent of the time. I think once we start to get production from the whole lineup, which is what we expect to happen and what started [Tuesday], we can do some damage.”

Matt Snyder has been fantastic on the mound, according to O’Boyle and that held true Tuesday as he picked up the win allowing just two hits over four innings, not issuing a walk while striking out five. Samuel Castillo Ardila closed things out with an inning of work not allowing a hit and striking out one.

Snyder is now 2-1 now on the year with a microscopic 0.93 ERA.

“With the number of games we play in a short time frame, we will need a lot of arms,” O’Boyle said. “We have them and many will have to make contributions for the season to be a success. That’s why I like our chances. We have a senior led team with 10 of them.”

O’Boyle said guys like Zackary Hartman, Ryan Hausman, Nicholas Lindenmuth, Connor Paashaus, Nicholas Kaintz, Carfara and Castillo will help on the mound as the season goes along.

“All have thrown this year and will have to pick up innings,” O’Boyle said.
