Coplay to receive $525,000 in funding
During Coplay Borough Council’s April 13 meeting, state Rep. Jeanne McNeill, D-133rd, announced the borough would be receiving a grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development in the amount of $200,000.
McNeill was involved in obtaining this grant and thanked council members for all their hard work and dedication in making the “borough thrive through the pandemic.” The funds have been allocated for specific needs of the borough, such as roof repairs at the borough hall, soil remediation at the new public works building and audit costs.
Coplay will also be receiving COVID-19-related funds from the federal government toward the end of May in the amount of $325,000. The borough will be given guidelines on how these funds can be used.
Council approved the purchase of a used 1997 Squad truck with equipment for Coplay Fire Department in the amount of $25,000. This truck will be purchased from Weatherly Fire Department and will accommodate six firefighters and their apparatus and air pack equipment. This will be a helpful addition to the two trucks the borough already owns.
Councilman Steve Burker made the motion to approve the borough’s membership with Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, which had been a topic of discussion at past meetings and, most recently, at the April 6 workshop. Council unanimously approved to continue the borough’s membership.
Council approved a motion to resume activities and meetings for Explorer Post 101 Train Club in the borough hall, upon receipt of the club’s certificate of insurance and newly signed lease.
Additionally, Coplay Athletic Club was granted approval to resume activities in the borough building, also upon presentation of the certificate of insurance and signing a new lease.
Council members noted any other private groups requesting to use the borough building will be looked at individually, and decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
In the public works department discussion, a tire drop-off for Coplay residents will be held 9 a.m.-2 p.m. May 15 in the upper lot of Coplay Parkway near the pool.
Additionally, street sweeping is scheduled for May 20 and 21.
