A lot of brass: Allentown Band quartet steps into stream with two concerts

The Allentown Band, America’s oldest civilian concert band (since 1828), is going with the flow.

Because of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic protocol, the band is live-streaming a Brass Quintet and Pipe Organ concert from St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Allentown, 7 p.m. April 19 and 26.

The concerts are being presented free.

Although the quintet will be performing live, there will be no audience in the church sanctuary during the concert.

The quintet of Allentown Band members includes DeVaughn Roberts, trumpet; Caitlin Heckman, trombone; Jeffrey Wohlbach, trumpet; Nancy Meckstroth, horn, and Allentown Band Conductor Ronald Demkee, tuba, accompanied by St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Director of Music, Cantor and Organist Eric Gombert, organ.

The program includes works by Johann Christoph Pezel, Anthony Holbourne, George Gershwin, W.C. Handy, Scott Joplin and John Philip Sousa.

The concert, part of the “Arts at St. John’s” series, is presented by the Music Performance Trust Fund administered locally by the Allentown Musicians’ Association, Local 45, and produced by Hesse Creative.

The streaming will go live several minutes before the concert start so the audience doesn’t miss a beat.

The quintet has been practicing at the Allentown Band rehearsal hall, the former Keystone Fire Station, Allentown.

The program is: Fanfare from “La Peri,” Paul Dukas, Barrington; two pieces by Anthony Holborne, King: “Honie-Suckle,” “Night Watch”; “Sonata No. 22,” Johann Pezel, King; Organ selection, Eric Gombert;

Also: “The Roaring Twenties,” Paul Nagle; “Strike Up the Band,” George Gershwin, Holcombe; “Love is Here to Stay,” George Gershwin, Holcombe; “Nice Work if You Can Get It,” George Gershwin, Holcombe; Organ interlude;

And: “St. Louis Blues,” W.C. Handy, Holcombe; “The Entertainer,” Scott Joplin, Frackenpohl; Organ selection, Eric Gombert: “America the Beautiful,“ Samuel A. Ward, Marianne Kim; “National Emblem March,” E.E. Bagley, Gore; “The Armed Forces Salute,” arranged, Jari A. Villaneueva, and “Stars and Stripes Forever,” John Philip Sousa, Holcombe.

While the Allentown Band typically performs an estimated 50 concerts a year, Demkee only conducted two invitation-only band concerts in 2020 outdoors at the Lehigh Parkway North, Salisbury Township, home of Joan Miller Moran and the late William J. Fenza.

“We are very pleased to be doing these live-stream events as a means of staying connected, but nothing matches the experience of live, in-person concerts,” Demkee says.

“We are eagerly looking forward to being with our audiences soon,” says Demkee.

The Allentown Band has received numerous awards, most recently being named a National Semi-Finalist for the 2021 American Prize in Performance in Band-Wind Ensemble Performance, Community Division, 2021. The American Prize finalists in the Community Band Division are to be announced.
