Zeph tennis team finds ways to improve
The Whitehall boys tennis team is finding ways to improve every match, and that’s a step in the right direction for a young squad.
They’re currently 1-6 on the season. However, beyond that record is a team whose players are gaining experience. They’ve faced some tough teams, including Parkland and Emmaus and Allentown Central Catholic.
In each of those matches, they managed to take some sets. Sustaining that momentum will be another step forward.
Head coach Robert Panny said that his players are putting in the work to stay competitive.
“Kids are getting better each day,” said Panny. “The growth since the season started has been tremendous. The final scores may not show it, but the rallies are going longer, and many games are making it to the 40-30/30-40 scores with a number of deuces.”
He said that it begins at practice, developing good habits.
“We are having competitive practices with the players, the hard work is paying off,” said Panny. “Each player has had a YouTube moment where they hit a great shot and in many cases, shots.”
They’re now looking to transfer that hard work into matches.
“We have six matches in the next eight days and we will see how it shapes up,” said Panny.
That hard work was on display in a tight match against ACC in mid March. Their singles players all put up good fights. At No. 1, Josh Laky gave Jessie Coulter a tussle, eventually losing 6-1, 6-4.
At No. 2, Nathan Mak made Tim Spinosa earn the win after the Zeph battled, prevailing 6-2, 6-2.
Dan Labram also managed to take a set at No. 3, losing to Dylan Alvarez 6-1, 6-0
Their win came against Pocono Mountain East, defeating the Cardinals, 4-1. In that match, PME’s Rashan Forde defeated Josh Laky 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles.
At No. 2 singles, Nathan Mak bested Caleb Grassi 6-4, 7-6, while Dan Labram downed James Grassi 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
In No. 2 Doubles, Gabby Roustic and Serge Kasparian defeated the duo of Shane Brown and Daniel Sorrentino 6-0, 6-2.
At No. 3 Doubles, the pairing of Lex Prebosnyak and Jimmy Kaba were victorious against Sean Daughty and Chadwick Bennett 6-0, 6-1.
