Rough Rider girls track gets a win
Catasauqua’s girls and boys’ track teams may have had a signature performance recently against Salisbury that could dictate the rest of their season.
The girls’ squad dominated the Falcons in a 111-31 performance and the boys’ unit dropped a close 78-57 decision.
“The girls did very well,” said head coach Kyle Rusnock. “The boys were very competitive and were right there.
“This was a good showing for us, and we know we can have more performances like this one.”
Aidan Gerhard won the girls’ shot put with a toss of 36-6, which is a usual qualifying mark for states. The Rough Riders swept the event with Lauren DeLong finishing second with a mark of 29-6. The duo also posted the same finish in the discus with Gerhard registering a toss of 75-7, and DeLong had a 68-3 post.
“We’re looking forward to seeing what they can do the rest of the way,” noted Rusnock. “It’s still early, and they are doing this well.”
Lexie Rushatz was a three-time winner in the 400, 800, and 1600 as was Tyra Jackson in the 110 and 330 hurdles and in the long jump. Breonna Brinkley won the 3200.
“I thought I ran well,” said Rushatz. “It was a struggle for me not to have anyone to pace because I was in first place in all three of my races.
“My goal was to get my 1,600 under six (5.55.9) given that I would have no one to pace with. I was able to do that, so it was a pretty successful meet for me.”
Jaclyn Waltz won the 200 followed by teammates Heaven Jenkins and Madelyn Gonzalez.
The Roughies won the 4 X100 with a foursome of Lailey Polanco, Jackson, Waltz, and Gonzalez. They also captured the 4 X 400 with Brinkley, Lucy Brubaker, Rushatz, and Juliza Rodriguez.
On the boys side, Luis Del Rosario was a double winner in the 110 and 300 hurdles.
Tyler Monahan was first in the discus and second in the shot put, Jared Dove won the 400, and Dorian Hoagland took the javelin.
“(Del Rosario) did a nice job, and he’s new to it,” added Rusnock. “It was the first time (Dove) ran that race, and he did very well.”
Rusnock also credited Wyatt Unes, who took a second in the 100 and 200.
“He’s a worker, and he’s just a great kid,” said Rusnock. “He has stepped it up for us.”
Rusnock likes the makeup of his team, and he expects them to be in the thick of things. The Roughies had a home meet against Saucon Valley Tuesday.
“We’re doing very well, and the team is in good spirits,” he stressed. “We’re looking forward to competing the rest of the way. Everyone is really working hard.”
