NHS tennis went 2-1 last week
Northampton’s boys tennis team recorded two wins and one loss last week with victories over East Stroudsburg North, 7-0, and Easton, 4-3, and a defeat by Freedom, 1-6.
In the Easton match, Northampton’s Lukas Connolly won the first set and led in the second set at two singles when Nicholas Strano forfeited due to injury. Connolly’s scores were 6-0, 2-1. It was the second time Connolly beat a player from Easton at two singles.
“I like it,” said Connolly regarding playing each Northampton County team twice. “It’s a little demoralizing when they destroy you in the first one and then you gotta’ play them again, but I think it’s good. You know what you’re playing the second time and you can prepare, and then you get a home court and an away court.”
Connolly, who is new to tennis, had a more difficult time against Freedom’s Arun Chhugani.
“The first time I played a match, I was hooked. It’s relaxing but fast at the same time,” Connolly said. “[Arun] came out strong, and I couldn’t keep the ball in the lines. I kept hitting it out.”
Northampton’s number one singles player Dylan Domchek, who is also new to the team, improved his game since defeating Easton’s Michael Martyak the first time and won again on Saturday, 6-1, 6-2.
“I’ve been friends with Alex (Guzman) in all of high school, and we played during quarantine as a fun thing to do, and I enjoyed it, so I thought I’d come out for the team,” Domchek said. “I’m good at getting the ball back. I don’t usually mess up, but I have to work on my power shots.”
Domchek said that Coach Daniele Bowman has been a big help in his overall improvement, recalling his first win against Nazareth’s Alex Rodriguez.
“It went to three sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-4), and it was a lot of fun, we were really getting into it, the points were long, and it was really enjoyable,” said Domchek. “He was the first player who was near my skill level, so I knew it was going to be competitive, and I just kept my mind in it.”
Northampton’s three singles player is Alex Guzman who defeated Easton’s Cole VanHoven, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
“In the first set, sometimes I’ve got to get warmed up a little bit, so most of the time I lose in those, but second set, I do come back and third set, hopefully, I’ve been trying to get back in the third set too,” Guzman said. “I did have some pretty good shots in the first Easton match, but that was another three setter.”
In doubles play against Easton, Domchek and Connolly teamed up at one doubles but lost, 5-8.
Cale Gogel and Logan Carbonell lost at two doubles, 1-6, 3-3, and at three doubles, Pearce Foulk and Noah Hassler lost, 4-6, 2-6, but four doubles players Kaleb Missmer and Noah Riechelderfer won, 6-4, 6-4 for the K-Kids win.
Dylan Domchek won his match at number one singles for the K-Kids, 6-3, 6-1, over Michael Martyak.
Lukas Connolly also won his match for the K-Kids at two singles, 6-2, 6-4, against Rodrigo Maguina, and at three singles, Alex Guzman won in three sets for Northampton, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, against Nicholas Strano.
At two doubles are juniors Cale Gogel and Logan Carbonell, who lost on Saturday, 2-6, 3-6, to Kyle Charria and Ty Russell.
At three doubles are senior Noah Hassler and sophomore Pearce Foulk, who lost to Josh Henry and Aiden Parkhurst, 4-6, 6-7 (11-13), but Bowman said they are meshing well together.
“Four doubles is secured by returning duo, seniors Kaleb Missmer and Ambrose Roland,” said Bowman. “They had some experience at doubles before the shutdown last year and are currently 2-1 this season.”
Noah Riechelderfer stepped in for Roland on Saturday, however, and won with Missmer, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), against Reese McCann and Miles Cabreza.
