Lehigh County Humane Society to break ground for renovations

Lehigh County Humane Society will break ground May 17 on a multitiered renovation plan for the shelter, 640 Dixon St., Allentown.

The renovation and development of new shelter includes amenities for the animals, as well as an expanded full-service community vet clinic for local pets needing affordable veterinary care.

Funding for the renovations are supported by the humane society capital campaign, in part by the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, donations from events and the community, and major donors.

There will be a groundbreaking ceremony 2 p.m. May 7 celebrated by staff and community supporters marking the beginning of the renovation process that will last through early 2022.

This is a major accomplishment for the Lehigh County Humane Society on its mission to provide a safe and comfortable environment for pets awaiting their forever homes, and for local families to provide low-cost veterinary care to their family pets.

“The Lehigh County Humane Society is the only animal shelter that provides financial assistance to responsible pet owners in the Lehigh Valley through our Community Vet Clinic,” a representative for the humane society said. “We believe a lack of financial agency does not equal a lack of love for a pet nor does it mean an individual does not deserve the joy of a pet because he or she does not have the financial resources for expensive procedures.

“We recognize the largest barrier that exists between an individual and responsible pet ownership is access to affordable, high-quality veterinary care that is given with dignity and without bias to loving and responsible pet owners.”

Renovations will include:

•Expanded affordable vet clinic open to the community five days a week;

•Updated adoptions and welcome center;

•Private adoption rooms;

•LCHS grooming salon;

•Feline enrichment center;

•Canine care center;

•Rescue and trauma center; and

•Night drop for law enforcement;

Lehigh County Humane Society is close to reaching its full goal to support the renovation project but still needs support.
