Jenny pitches Catasauqua to two shutout wins last week
When his team’s pitching is solid, Catasauqua head baseball coach Steve Bradley believes his team can be competitive with anyone.
He had that belief confirmed last week.
Junior lefthander Brandon Jenny tossed a pair of shutouts in leading the Rough Riders to a pair of victories over Northern Lehigh (15-0) and Salisbury (3-0). Catty also suffered a 12-1 loss to Northwestern last week.
Jenny, who has all three of the team’s victories (3-2) also had a 15-0 shutout over Moravian Academy.
“He has thrown really well for us,” said Bradley. “He has pitched as well as he could have.
“He was right sound 100 pitches against Salisbury, and he should have been out of the inning earlier.”
Jenny, who allowed one hit and struck out nine in a shortened five-inning stint against Salisbury, believed his pitching arsenal was effective. He had eight strikeouts in the victory over Northern Lehigh.
“I thought I threw a heck of a game,” he said about Salisbury. “I came out strong and finished. My curveball was working a lot better. We really wanted this win after what happened (against Northwestern). We kept our heads up and fought back.
“I felt like I threw a good game against (Northern Lehigh). I was starting to slow down and my pitching wasn’t where it should have been, but I came back and struck out two kids with the bases loaded.”
Austin Brett started the top of the seventh in a scoreless game against Salisbury with a single and then stole second. Jenny helped his own cause with an RBI double, and Cole Schiffer added an RBI single.
“Brett has been doing a nice job for us,” added Bradley. “This is the first time he has played baseball in six year, and we know it might take him a while. But he really has adjusted quickly, and has been a big part of our team.”
Brett likes what has happened so far.
“Baseball has been going good,” he said. “I think we have a solid team and could have some good wins this year.”
Derek Troxell made his first career start against Northwestern, but he had control problems early.
Bryann Rivera relieved him and pitched four innings before McKay Lewis finished in a five-inning shortened game.
“Rivera came in and did a nice job for us,” added Bradley. “If it wasn’t for the errors, we would have been right there.”
With Monday’s game against Southern Lehigh rained out, the Roughies will end the week at Pen Argyl Wednesday and host Palisades Friday.
