Freedom tops Central
Freedom tennis player Gavin Labaddia has regained his footing after bouncing between singles and doubles play due to an early-season ankle injury and won his match at two singles, 6-1, 7-5, against Allentown Central Catholic’s Dylan Alvarez last Wednesday at Freedom.
“A lot of games went to deuce, but overall I was making errors and he was doing a good job of pushing me side-to-side,” Labaddia said of the close second set. “He was also a lefty and normally I would hit crosscourt, but today I had to hit down the line. My coach was telling me to try and bring him into the net and maybe lob him, and I did end up lobbing him a lot.”
Labaddia won the match on a deep shot to the back corner.
“I tried to get it in the general area. I didn’t mean for it to be that precise,” Labaddia laughed.
Patriot first singles player Noah Potts also won his match, 6-3, 6-0, against Jesse Coulter in Freedom’s 6-1 team win over the Vikings.
“My energy level was too low at the start, but once it started to get close, I knew I’d have to pick it up a little,” Potts said. “I went up early and then I got broken, and it was 4-3, and then at that point, I won the next eight games.”
Freedom’s Arun Chhughani defeated Charlie Long at three singles, 6-1, 6-1.
“I felt pretty good about today’s match. I’ve been hitting better since the beginning of the season,” Chhughani said. “I think the match with Northampton was more challenging but it was more fun for me because I could play more offensive and attack the ball more.”
In doubles matches, Freedom won the first three when Shivam Chand and Lance Aborde defeated Will McGlynn and Dan Wheeler, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, Advay Deshmukh and Fahim Parker defeated Jake Zeller and Alessio Flores, 6-0, 6-2, and Dylan Sarkozy and Tommy Potts defeated Dan Petruno and Enzo Fabrizio, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Central Catholic won at four doubles when Matt Hettan and Mack Zeller defeated Brian Gerra and Baptiste Boussageon, 7-5, 6-3.
