Monahan looks to make mark as senior
After his freshman year, Catasauqua’s Tyler Monahan discovered there was more to throwing a shot put than just relying on his strength.
Instead, he began exploring his different options.
“I started looking to learn more about it,” recalled Monahan, who also throws discus. “It was about looking and studying different forms and what would be the most effective for me.
“I think I have become better throwing the shot because of the work that I put into it.”
Three years later as a senior, Monahan has his sights set on doing well with the shot put and discus at leagues and districts, as well as earning a chance at states.
He began the season with a third-place finish in a tri-meet with Pen Argyl and Southern Lehigh, recording a mark of 38-05.25. It was a good start in several ways.
“It felt good to be back throwing the shot,” he said. “It was hard not being there last year because of COVID.
“I was working on my strength training as often as I could. I feel like I am stronger and feel better about everything.”
Head coach Kyle Rusnock has appreciated Monahan’s effort and dedication.
“Tyler has put a lot of work into track and it shows,” said Rusnock. “Tyler is the type of kid every coach wishes he had on his team.
“We are looking for Tyler to perform very well this year, especially in the shot put.”
Monahan completed a four-year football career at Catty, a sport he began playing with flag football at the age of four.
He felt comfortable with the sport during this sophomore year when he started at nose guard.
“I think I really felt confident about everything then,” he stated. “I really learned a lot about the sport.
“This past year was more than I could ask for. We made districts and won a playoff game. It was fun and I wish I could come back and play with these guys. I know they will be successful.”
Monahan credited the support of his father, Brian, who has coached and guided him along the way.
He plans to attend Kutztown University next fall to pursue a degree in secondary education with a concentration in environmental sciences. Monahan has entertained the thought of possibly continuing his football or track career.
However, he plans to leave his mark this spring.
“I have been looking at the Colonial League site every day to see who I am competing against,” he added. “I believe I can do well and have a shot to get to states.”
