STUDENT PROFILE-Sebastian Jaskowski, Freedom HS Coordinated by Julie Swan

Grade: 12

Family members: My mom, Agnes Jaskowski, my dad Robert Jaskowski and two sisters, Veronica and Amelia, 14 and 3

Favorite subject: My favorite subject is engineering. I am lucky to take part in the PLTW program at Freedom, which allows me to take interesting classes about the engineering process. The best part of this class is that everything we learn is applicable in a real engineering job. We use the same software, follow the same processes and deal with challenges as professional engineers do.

Activities: I am president of the Freedom High School Robotics team, where students of all skill levels who are interested in engineering come together to build robots and compete against other schools. Last year I co-founded the Freedom High School Investment Club, to provide a place for students interested in stocks and finances to compete by creating stock portfolios.

Next steps: I hope to study computer science at Carnegie Mellon University. I’m really interested in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and hope I can expand my knowledge of these fields at Carnegie Mellon.

Career goals: I would love to get a job at either a large tech company or a promising startup working with machine learning. Artificial Intelligence is a field that has seen a lot of growth recently and will most likely continue to grow rapidly in the future. The potential of this technology are nearly limitless and I hope I can be a part of it.

Heroes: My hero is Elon Musk. He’s an entrepreneur who isn’t just focused on making money, but instead wants to use his resources and technology to help society. He noticed the growing problem of carbon emissions, and created an electric car company to try and solve that problem. It’s that commitment to problem solving on a global scale that I admire.

Hobbies: Besides my interests in programming, I love the outdoors. I try to spend as much time as I can hiking and biking. I also enjoy traveling and visiting new places. I spend a lot of time on personal programming projects. I love building new things that other people can use.

Current Job(s): I work a couple of hours a week as a busboy at Bruno Scipioni’s Italian Ristorante.

Volunteer and community work: I spent a good amount of time volunteering as a Trail Tender for the D&L Trail. I helped with cutting grass and other general maintenance. I especially enjoyed this volunteer service because I frequently bike on the trail myself, so it was great being able to see the effects of the work by myself and other volunteers.

Likes: I really enjoy the outdoors, and love to hike, bike and climb mountains. I also like to read interesting science fiction books.

Dislikes: There aren’t many things I actively dislike, however I am not a big fan of integrals.

Greatest accomplishment (so far): My greatest accomplishment so far is how the robotics team at Freedom transformed under my leadership. When I took over as President, our team had just two members and we weren’t able to have a finished robot by the time the first competition rolled around. Now we have a strong team of eight dedicated members and last year we managed to build a decent robot that did well at the competition.

Advice for peers: I would tell them they shouldn’t be afraid of difficulty or a challenge. The things people most want in life can only be achieved by putting up with difficulty and struggle. So I would tell them to take the most challenging classes they can and push themselves as hard as they can.

Student profile subjects are selected by faculty and administration at the individual schools.
