Margaret “Fran” Cooney, 88, of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, died March 14, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of retired Brig. Gen. Wilson C. Cooney, United States Air Force. They were married for 66 years. Born in Charlotte, N.C., she was the daughter of the late John Robert and Katie Vance McAuley.
The family eventually moved to Emmaus and she attended Emmaus High School where she met her husband.
She became an Air Force officer’s wife and loving mother who moved all over the world including Japan, Italy and Germany, while raising four children. She kept the family organized through numerous moves making a home for the family everywhere they went. Through typhoons, tornadoes and earthquakes, she taught discipline, humor and family unity.
She was the commander-in-chief of the household. In addition to managing the home and four children, she volunteered with the Red Cross, was active and served as president of the officers’ wives club. A highlight of her life was when she met Pope John Paul while she and her husband were visiting Rome while living in Italy.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Bill Jr. and David; daughters, Susan Strasevicz and Karen Springer; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by sisters, Bobbie Novak and Nancy Miller.
