STUDENT PROFILE - Belinda Young, Freedom HS

Grade: 12

Family members: My family members consist of my mom, dad and older brother.

Favorite subject: My favorite subjects are biology and chemistry because I really enjoy learning about science and its applications in research and medicine. In biology, I love gaining a greater understanding of life through genetics, evolution and ecology. In chemistry, I love its sense of logic and complexity as the subject covers a vast range of matter.

Activities: I am the historian of Student Council and National Honor Society and photography captain of BASD Mini-THON. I co-founded Exploring STEM Club to create more science opportunities in high school through competitions and projects. Also, I am involved in Science Fair, Scholastic Scrimmage and girls varsity tennis.

Next steps: I hope to go to college and major in biology or neuroscience.

Career goals: I hope to pursue a career in medicine and conduct research in the future to make a positive difference in the world.

Heroes: I would say one of my heroes is Greta Thunberg. I think Greta is very inspiring because of her activism and fight for the betterment of the environment by igniting some of the largest climate change strikes and protest to offset carbon emissions and stop burning fossil fuels. I admire her passion for the environment and future because climate change is one of the greatest issues we’re faced with as people.

Hobbies: My biggest hobby is photography. I love taking pictures in all formats, especially 35mm film and instant film. I also enjoy editing digital pictures and using Photoshop as a means of creativity and art.

Current Job(s): I am an intern with a research program under the American Chemical Society and National Institutes of Health.

Volunteer work: In the summer I volunteer at St. Luke’s University Hospital in the pharmacy department, where I package and tube patient medications and distribute physician orders to pharmacists. During the school year I volunteer at East Hills Middle School as a math tutor. I also volunteer at BASD Mini-THON/PCFLV events to raise money for pediatric cancer.

Likes: I love taking pictures, listening to music, traveling and hiking.

Dislikes: I don’t necessarily like ignorance and close-mindedness.

Greatest sccomplishment (so far): My biggest accomplishment is gaining the opportunity to work for the American Chemical Society and National Institutes of Health. I love learning more about science and medicine while getting to meet other interns across the country. From this opportunity I also get to talk to leading scientists in their field about their research. Specifically, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge about Native American health.

Advice for peers: If I had to give a piece of advice to my peers, I’d tell them to keep an open mind. I think it’s important to see things from new perspectives; it’s how we learn and understand others.
