Michael S. Matlock
Michael S. Matlock, 83, of Macungie, formerly of Sunset Beach, N.C., died at home March 15, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Martha A. (Tatkovsky) Matlock. They celebrated 61 years of marriage Sept. 12. Born in Memphis, Tenn., he was the son of the late Eugene and Mary (Byrne) Matlock. He was a graduate of Allentown Central Catholic High School, Class of 1956 and served his country for three years in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was a manager for most of his career in the retail auto parts industry and later working for the Butter Valley Golf Course for five years. In addition, he was a golf coach at Upper Perkiomen High School until his retirement. During his golf career, he hit three holes in one.
In 2002, he and his wife moved to Sunset Beach, N.C. In 2020 they returned to the Lehigh Valley to be closer to their family.
He was a member of Seaside United Methodist Church, Sunset Beach, N.C.
He was instrumental in organizing the Parkland Area Jaycees and was the charter president, a state vice president and U.S. Jaycees director in 1970-71. He loved shopping, being on his computer, telling jokes and stories and reading. His hero was John Wayne. He truly enjoyed random acts of kindness on people, especially paying for strangers’ meals and always trying to remain anonymous.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Kathleen and her husband, Dennis Knappenberger and Karen and her husband, Lewis Hartzell, all of Emmaus; a son, Scott and his wife, Lisa, of Lansdale; grandchildren, James, Sarah, Ashley, Justin and Abigail; five great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; brother, Eugene Jr. and a sister, Mary Pappas. He was predeceased by a sister, Lucille.
