Radio takes fourth in state

Ethan Radio has earned a lot of hardware this season.

The Parkland junior earned gold medals for winning the East Penn Conference’s midseason meet, the EPC’s championship meet and the District 11 Class 3A Championships.

Radio added one more medal to his 2021 collection last weekend when he took fourth place at the PIAA Diving Championships at Cumberland Valley High School.

“I was hoping to get top three this year,” he said. “I’m still proud of how I finished my dives. That’s really what I want to look forward to more than placing. I look forward to how I did my dives and I’m really proud what I did today.”

Radio was looking to finish one place higher than he did a year ago when he also finished fourth. He scored a few points higher at states this year at 443.65 after last year’s 441.55.

“I think my first five rounds were a little bit of a struggle,” he said of Saturday’s performance. “I definitely finished strong. I’m definitely proud of how I finished.”

He nailed his final dive of the meet, a reverse twister, but it wasn’t enough to get into the top three.

“I was struggling with it for a couple weeks now and today I blew it off the roof,” said Radio, whose career-best 11-dive score is the 480.85 he scored to win the EPC midseason meet. “I don’t think I could do it better. I was really proud about that one.”

Fox Chapel’s David McNelis won the meet at 535.30, followed by Conor Gesing (Abington) at 510.9 and Stephen Barllett (Northeastern) with a score of 473.65.

Radio, who has been diving for over five years, usually dives in a lot of meets outside high school season. But this year the COVID-19 pandemic caused him to miss all of the club diving season.

Last year, the state swimming and diving championships were one of the final high school sporting events held before everything shut down. This year, after a lot of uncertainly heading into the winter sports season, Radio was happy to be back on the board.

“States last year was so fun with the whole team, swimmers and divers together,” he said. “We had a good bonding experience. I’m disappointed we couldn’t do that this year, but I’m happy we were able to have this meet.”

With his high school season behind him, Radio will continue to compete on his club team, TNT Diving, which is based in Hatboro. He hopes to compete in a national meet this summer.

“This year we’re going to focus on going to USA Nationals,” he said. “That’s the biggest meet that I’m going to train for and hope to peak there.”
