Broadway stars ‘Play a Part’ for Pa. Playhouse

In commemoration of St. Patrick’s Day, The Pennsylvania Playhouse celebrated all that is green, and that includes the greenest of all Broadway musicals, “Wicked.”

Three Broadway actors who have starred in the hit musical that tells the story of the green-hued Wicked Witch of the West from “The Wizard of Oz” joined area performers online for the Bethlehem community theater’s ongoing “We All Play A Part” fundraising campaign.

The musicians sing and play instruments for Celtic songs and songs with green themes online. The performances can be seen for free on Playhouse social media through March.

On March 17, via Zoom, they performed “One Short Day” from “Wicked.”

“The Playhouse board has continued to get creative in our fundraising, all the while staying true to our mission to create art and uplift the community,” says Alessandra Fanelli, Playhouse Development director.

“As March marks a year living in this pandemic, The Playhouse wanted to create online content to remind the community that March also marks the season where many turn to find hope, luck and faith,” Fanelli says.

Joining local performers in the virtual cabaret are Broadway stars Lindsay Heather Pearce, Jonah Platt and Brittney Johnson.

Pearce was starring as Elphaba in “Wicked” when Broadway went dark because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic shutdown.

She was one of two runners-up on “The Glee Project” in 2011, which resulted in a guest-star role on the TV show, “Glee.” She played Harmony, an ambitious and talented singer, in the third-season of “Glee.”

Pearce starred as Cathy in Jason Robert Brown’s musical, “The Last Five Years,” in Texas and Wendla in “Spring Awakening” in Los Angeles, before taking over as Elphaba in “Wicked” on Broadway in 2020.

Platt, the older brother of “Dear Evan Hansen” star Ben Platt, portrayed Fiyero on Broadway in “Wicked” 2015 - 2016. He is known for his scene-stealing role of the frat boy in the finale of TVs “The Office.”

He appeared in NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar Live” and voices the character of “Milton Moss” on Netflix’s animated series “Trolls: The Beat Goes On.”

Johnson became the first person of color to play the role of Good Witch Glinda in “Wicked” on Broadway in 2019.

The veteran of many Broadway shows played Eponine in “Les Miserables,” Little Eva in “Beautiful: the Carole King Musical” and understudied Diana Ross in “Motown the Musical.”

Johnson joined Kristen Chenoweth in the Broadway revue “Kristin Chenoweth: For the Girls” that celebrated the music of female performers.

The Broadway trio joins Lehigh Valley thespians Cindi Greatsinger, Angelina Dries, Robert Dudley, Micah Henning, Krista Metter, Kenneth Purcell, Alexia Rastelli, Aria Sivick, Elijah Sivick, Taylor Van Kooten and Deven Windisch.

Those who make a donation to the Playhouse have the opportunity to win a “One Short Day” glitter globe and music box and memorabilia from “Wicked.” The drawing is March 31.
