Steckel resignation on March 22 school board meeting agenda

The resignation of NASD Assistant Superintendent Dr. Robert Steckel is expected to be on the agenda at the 7 p.m. March 22 board of education meeting, held in the Northampton Area Middle School cafeteria.
Steckel was approved March 8 by Whitehall-Coplay School Board as the new Whitehall-Coplay School District superintendent, effective May 3. Steckel’s last day in NASD is May 2.
In WCSD, he will take over for Dr. Lorie Hackett, who will retire at the end of this academic year.
John Toman was hired as the Northampton Area High School head football coach by a vote of 8-0, with one school director absent at the Feb. 24 school board meeting. Toman will be paid $13,194 for the 2021-22 school year.
In other personnel changes, school directors voted unanimously at the March 8 board meeting to approve:
• Michael Missmer, assistant to the athletic director, winter and spring sports seasons of the 2020-21 school year, at $2,060 each season
• Morgan Bear, short-term substitute kindergarten teacher, Franklin Elementary School, March 1 through the 2020-21 school year, at $125 per diem
• Kaleigh Bobeck, short-term substitute kindergarten teacher, Franklin Elementary, March 3 through the 2020-21 school year, pending proper documentation, at $125 per diem
• Ashley Gulla, short-term substitute grade 1 teacher, Siegfried Elementary School, March 17 through the 2020-21 school year, at $125 per diem
Also, the board approved March 8, by 9-0 votes:
• Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit student driver education program agreement
• Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School’s 2021-22 budget of $13,171,494, with NASD’s portion of $2,387,773
• Carbon Intermediate Unit 20’s budget for 2021-22 of $3,750,550, with NASD’s portion of $43,581.15
School directors voted 8-0, with one director absent at the Feb. 24 meeting, to approve:
• Lauren Mortimer, science teacher, NAMS, effective March 29, at $54,055, prorated with benefits
• Resignation of Carole Torbinski, security officer, effective Feb. 18
• Memorandum of understanding for services between Valley Youth House and NASD for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year for additional one-to-one counseling three additional days per week at Moore, George Wolf, Lehigh and Borough elementary schools at a cost not to exceed $19,404, paid by a Pennsylvania Department of Education Safe Schools Program 2020-21 grant at no cost to NASD
• Letter of agreement and fee schedule from Vantagen LLC to administer NASD’s flexible spending account benefit plan, effective from July 1 to June 30, 2023
• Reappoint Crystal Becker, Crista Billowitch and Walter Fries, trustees, Northampton Area Public Library, for three-year terms, effective March 1-Feb. 29, 2024
• Accept, with appreciation, a child’s wheelchair, donated by St. Matthew’s United Church of Christ, Kunkletown
School directors voted 9-0, with one director absent at the Feb. 8 meeting, to approve:
• Resignation of Mary Persichetti, speech and language pathologist, for her retirement, effective June 7
• Resignation of Faye Gross, special education instructional assistant, for her retirement, effective June 4
• Resignation of Georgine Hottle, elementary teacher, for her retirement, effective June 7
• Resignation of Krystyna Dalrymple, reading specialist, for her retirement, effective June 7
• Catalog fixed discount program awarded by the IU-20 Joint Purchasing Board for Jan. 1-Dec. 31
• Three-year agreement with Gorman & Associates P.C. to provide auditing for NASD and NAPL, fiscal years 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23
• Approve settlement of real estate tax assessment appeal filed in Court of Common Pleas of Northampton County by NASD against FedEx Ground Package System Inc., for the district tax year beginning July 1, 2020, and July 1, 2021, and authorize NASD Attorney Raymond P. Wendolowski to execute the settlement
• Creation of the Jess Finlayson Memorial Scholarship Fund to benefit senior volleyball scholar athletes and math students
