Bicyclist fatally injured in a hit and run accident

A Lower Macungie Township bicyclist was fatally injured when a vehicle struck his bicycle in a hit and run crash in the 6700 block of Mountain Road, Lower Macungie Township, 5:03 p.m. March 9, according to media releases from Pennsylvania State Police Fogelsville and the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office and Forensics Center.

Alexander Zarnas, 36, was pronounced dead 11:38 p.m. March 11 at Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest, Salisbury Township, according to a media release from the coroner’s office.

An autopsy was performed March 12 and the cause of death was determined to be multiple blunt force injuries. The manner of death was found to be an accident.

Pennsylvania State Police detailed the incident as follows:

A bicycle operated by Zarnas was traveling west on Mountain Road. A grey 2015 BMW 528i allegedly struck the rear of the bicycle. The impact ejected the bicyclist who hit the front windshield of the vehicle and was thrown into the air.

The bicyclist landed on a downhill embankment.

The vehicle continued westbound. The driver allegedly failed to stop or to call 911.

The vehicle was spotted by a passing motorist on Gehman Road. The passing motorist contacted authorities while following the vehicle to a residence until state police troopers arrived.

Lehigh Valley Hospital personnel contacted state police 11:50 p.m. March 11 with notification of Zarnas’s death, according to police.

Zarnas is described by police as not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The driver of the vehicle, described as a 48-year-old male, of Lower Macungie Township, was not named by police in media information available at press time.

Macungie Ambulance Corps also responded.

The Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office also is among agencies investigating the incident.

In a telephone call March 15, Pamela Lehman, public information officer for the district attorney, said the accident remains under investigation.
