Szerencsits, Hosking earn swim medals
Northampton junior Olivia Szerencsits is a two-time silver medalist after Saturday’s District XI Class 3A Swimming Championships held at Parkland High School.
Szerencsits won her first silver in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:56.76 and her second in the 500 free with a time of 5:13.35.
“I dove in, had good underwaters, and a really good breakout. My turns were really good. I was off the wall pretty quick. Usually I take out the first half, I wouldn’t say slow, but it’s a bit of a struggle, and I took out the first half pretty fast,” said Szerencsits of the 200 free.
Szerencsits also beat her own school record in the 200.
“I was a bit surprised,” she said. “I thought I was going to get third or fourth, but it’s a place up from last year.”
Teammate Sarah Hosking won a bronze medal in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.32.
“I worked my underwaters and they were what held me the whole race,” said Hosking, who typically swims the 200 IM and the 100 breast. “I was excited to try something different. It was probably three weeks ago when I decided I was going to swim backstroke.”
Northampton Cullen Mentzell had no hesitation in having the Northampton senior try something new.
“I put her in backstroke the last two meets and she set a pool record,” he said. “She’s a really well-rounded swimmer and a good IM-er.”
The K-Kids also won a fourth place medal in the 400 free relay with the foursome of Olivia Green, Szerencsits, Allison Nemeth and Hosking. Their time was 3:52.58.
“That was awesome. That’s such a fun race,” said Hosking, the anchor. “My teammates were cheering me on and I kind of knew by their reaction that we had gotten fourth, and I looked up at the board, and there it was.”
