Burnette, Sergent take fourths

Freedom senior Abby Burnette and Liberty sophomore Brooke Sergent were fourth place medal winners at the District XI Class 3A Swimming Championships on Saturday at Parkland High School.

Burnette took fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.74.

“My start was really good, and I had a really strong pullout that set the tone for my first 50. I felt like I was able to get off the wall faster, and actually racing against people made it better,” Burnette said. “I’m very happy because I finished my high school career with a medal.”

Sergent took fourth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.16.

“I was happy, but I took it out like a 50 and went too fast in the beginning. I didn’t breathe as much so it slowed me down,” Sergent said. “I think my underwaters were good and my breakouts.”

Sergent was also part of Liberty’s 200 free relay, along with Sydney Taylor, Sarah Park, and Talia Lehr, finishing fourth in 1:43.34, just ahead of Nazareth who placed fifth in 1:43.97.

“I knew [Nazareth’s anchor] was right there and I had to go faster,” said Lehr. “We just knew we had to do our best. That’s all you can ask for this season.”

Liberty’s 200 free relay was seeded sixth.

“I liked that a lot. I was really pleased with that one,” said Hurricane coach Reik Foust.

Liberty’s 200 medley relay was seeded fourth but placed fifth.

“Not racing anyone this year hurt the girls more than it hurt the guys,” Foust said. “Talia, Madison (Drager), they’re meet swimmers, and if you’re not up against somebody, it’s tough.”
