The Parkland board recently awarded a total of $12,229,391 in bids to various contractors for Phase II of the Schnecksville Elementary School improvement project.

During a presentation in February, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Rod Troutman commented on the progress of the work.

“Schnecksville Project I is entering the last phase of construction. The project is ahead of schedule and under budget,” Troutman said.

The first phase included paint, floors and other cosmetic improvements; roof replacement; masonry re-pointing; updates to meet code requirements; plumbing, electrical, and waterline replacements; new heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems; and removal of hazardous materials.

Bids for Phase I, which involved everything except the 1926 section of the complex, were $6.1 million.

Phase II includes construction of an eight-classroom addition, new main office and entry, adjacent interior renovations, partial building demolition and overall site improvements.

Bids over $1 million were awarded to Livengood for earthwork ($2,939,467); Duggan and Marcon for metal studs and drywall ($1,549,957); JBM Mechanical for HVAC ($1,246,000); and Wind Gap electrical ($1,297,000).

Other bids went to Empire for demolition ($498,704); Macri for concrete work ($374,788); Eshbach for masonry ($919,000); Stewart Amos for structural steel ($771,000); Detwiler for roofing ($874,000); Hi Tech for ceramic/paver tile ($140,400); Metro for flooring ($226,295); GC Zarnas for painting ($68,900); Northeast Interior for casework ($462,000); Entrance Systems for storefront and interior glazing ($309,300); JBM Mechanical for plumbing ($442,000); and SA Comunale for fire protection ($109,880).

A large amount of soil now located on the east side of the building was obtained from a warehouse site which had an excess amount.

The soil will be used for berms and will be needed for general use in the project.

A major undertaking coming along in Project II will be creation of a bus circle on the west side of the property and construction of a loop connecting to Spring Hill Drive for parents to drop off or pick up their children on the east side.

Outdoor excavating work is scheduled to begin in April.

The classic 1926 portion of the Schnecksville School is listed for removal next year.
