Man dies in police-involved shooting

A Catasauqua man died in an officer-involved shooting Feb. 19 in the borough.

According to Pennsylvania State Police Troop M, Catasauqua police were called just before 2 p.m. to 133 S. 14th St. for a report of a dispute between a man and his ex-girlfriend.

Three borough officers responded to the call. As they entered the home, Ryan Daniel Shirey, 27, fled to the basement of the home, where he retrieved a revolver, police said.

When the officers entered the basement, one of the police officers fired his own weapon, striking Shirey, according to the report.

Shirey was pronounced dead at the scene by Lehigh County Deputy Coroner Jason Nicholas.

Lehigh County Coroner Eric D. Minnich said Feb. 20 Shirey died of gunshot wounds and ruled the manner of death a homicide. Homicide is defined as death at the hands of another, Minnich added.

There were no injuries to police officers or other people who were in the residence at the time.

The intersections of Bath Avenue and South 14th Street as well as South 14th and Cleveland streets were closed while emergency personnel launched an investigation.

Assisting at the scene were Lehigh County Special Operations; Catasauqua Fire, Fire Police and Police departments; Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority Police Department; Lehigh County Coroner’s Office; and Troop M Forensic Services Unit.

The borough officer who fired the weapon has been placed on administrative leave.

The investigation continues by the Troop M Major Case Team, Lehigh County Homicide Task Force and Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.
