The Feb. 1 Emmaus Borough Council meeting began without public appeals, community minutes or special presentations. The meeting moved quickly to the approval of last month’s minutes.
In communications, a thank-you letter was sent by Dale Kratzer to the Emmaus Ambulance Corps and Emmaus Police Department for their excellent work and response times.
Danielle Mauerer, a home health nurse, wrote a complimentary letter regarding Emmaus paramedic Cara Biery.
“Mrs. Biery was outstanding and very professional on a call where one of her clients was really struggling,” Mauerer said.
Next, there was a request to place a directional sign at the intersection of Seventh and Chestnut streets by South Mountain Memory Care. Borough Manager Shane Pepe is handling this request himself. Council previously declined this request. Pepe will communicate this to the memory care’s owner.
In a yearly request, the Emmaus Kiwanis Club requested to use Emmaus Community Park for the Easter Egg Hunt. However, Pepe wants to go over COVID-19 guidelines this year before approving the event.
Junior Councilman Jonas Hausmann, an Emmaus High School student, was reappointed. This is Hausmann’s third year as the borough’s junior council member. His position will last through August, as he graduates from high school this year.
Additionally, Melynda Cameron was reappointed to a 2-year term with the arts commission.
In general administration, Council President Brent Labenberg announced Emmaus’ new Deputy Chief of Police Troy Schantz passed his civil service examinations and was certified for civil service protection by borough council.
Monthly bills were approved. The bill list amounted to $359,234.
During Pepe’s borough manager’s report, it was announced Christopher Hayes and Braden Damitz were hired as part-time EMTs.
In one of the last action items on the agenda, Jason Jesmain was promoted to the position of Firefighter II.
