To the Editor:
HB38, which calls for the creation of districts for the appellate courts, is a clear assault on the separation of powers and would make Pennsylvania judges more susceptible to partisan politics.
This is why Fair Districts PA, the Pennsylvania Bar Association and at least 24 other organizations are against this bill. If this bill passes, it will be possible for legislators to gerrymander our judiciary. It is also a poorly written bill that will face many challenges.
I want to thank state Rep. Zach Mako, R-183rd, for meeting with representatives of Fair Districts PA to hear our concerns with this bill. The meeting was respectful. He listened to his constituents, and he was eager to be informed.
Democracy can only survive with an exchange of ideas and compromise. This is what is needed by our representatives now at such a charged political time in our country - kindness and courtesy, toning down the rhetoric and listening to facts.
I am thankful for such a meeting, but more so, I truly hope Mako votes no on this flawed bill. Please join me in asking Mako and all our legislators to vote against this bill.
