Guard play pushes PHS past Dieruff

Over the course of the first few games of the 2020-21 season, the Parkland High School boys basketball team has received a large contribution of scoring from its big men.

Freshman guard Nick Coval has burst onto the scene and led the Trojans in scoring a majority of the games, but as a whole, play from the big men has highlighted games.

That changed last Saturday afternoon as Coval and senior point guard Trey Rolle combined to lead Parkland to a 54-38 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference road victory at Dieruff High School. The duo combined to score more than half of the Trojans (4-2 overall) points, tallying 28 of the 54. Will Meeker also added eight points, including two 3-pointers.

“Guard play has been strong,” Stephens said. “Nick, Trey, along with J.T. [Siggins], Will [Meeker], Matt [Bauer] and Blake [Barthol] have all done a real nice job and seem confident and composed most times on the floor. They seem to be playing more together each game.”

It was the second win in a row for Parkland after defeating Allen 64-51 two days prior. After falling in their first game of the season to Central Catholic, the Trojans have won four out of the last five. Stephens has seen improvements across the board from his group both on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.

“Guys have been playing really hard all year,” said Stephens. “Now, it’s just a matter of building confidence and their games will step up automatically.”

Jake Mclean recorded nine points, Matt Rantz contributed four, and Dahlir Adams and Bauer each added two points for the Trojans.

In a season where postponements have happened more often than ever and each day is different, the Parkland group is just happy to be able to play.

“The guys just want to play,” said Stephens. “They have honestly been great all year in regard to dealing with a tough situation. I think we as a whole have embraced being fortunate enough to play and compete when possible. I am proud of them.”

Parkland next takes on Southern Lehigh in a nonconference game on the road Friday.
