Sometimes it’s simply your night.
On Friday against Northern Lehigh, that happened to be the case for Northwestern sharpshooter Cayden Fitch.
Fitch caught fire in the first half, draining five three-pointers and propelling the Tigers to a 58-41 Colonial League victory over the Bulldogs.
Fitch and the Tigers offense wasted no time getting going. The sophomore hit back to back three-pointers on Northwestern’s first two possessions of the game as the Tigers got out to a commanding 8-0 lead.
“Early on, the way the defense was shifting, I got some opportunities and I was able to knock them down,” said Fitch. “Dylan (Witkowski) was also on my side of the floor and he’s a great shooter, so they were shading toward him and I was open. I just kept hitting.”
With the Tigers leading by 10 to start the second quarter after a Fitch trey at the buzzer, the Bulldogs tried to battle back as they put together a run midway through the frame, cutting the Northwestern lead to six with 2:43 remaining in the half. Senior Ardit Mujovic scored seven points during the Bulldogs’ surge.
But Fitch and the Tigers offense finished the quarter on a 9-0 run to lead 34-21 at intermission. Fitch added two more triples in the second quarter and finished the half with 18 points.
“Cayden came ready to play tonight. His shot looked great and he shot with confidence,” said Northwestern head coach Jerry Lloyd. Northwestern’s defensive effort helped it put away the Bulldogs in the third quarter. The Tigers forced eight turnovers in the quarter, outscoring Northern Lehigh 12-4.
“I thought we played very consistent on the defensive end,” said Lloyd. “That’s what we want our staple to be. We gave good effort defensively and we played pretty well.”
Fitch led the Tigers with 21 points and Ethan Lazarus added 10. For the Bulldogs, Mujovic scored a game-high 24 points.
The Tiger defense forced 17 Northern Lehigh turnovers. Northwestern held a significant advantage inside with forwards Justin Holmes and Andres Garrido. The two dominated on the offensive boards in the game.
