LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Season winding down

Northampton’s wrestling season is similar to many in District 11 and across the state, as it’s been a pieced together day-by-day and week-by-week.

The K-Kids are (2-1) since losing to Nazareth 32-29 on January 27th.

That may be their last dual meet of the season too.

Their bout with Bethlehem Catholic was canceled last week because of COVID concerns with the Golden Hawks program and it won’t be rescheduled.

That left them with a possible match against Parkland last night, past Press deadlines, as their final tuneup of the season.

Whether or not both teams could dig out of Monday’s battering snowstorm over the region would determine if the match would take place.

“We are supposed to wrestle Parkland but it’s not looking good because of this snow,” said head coach Seth Lisa. “If this match gets canceled, we have no more events planned.”

That means no more dual meets the rest of the season for the team, including district duals. Lisa confirmed that he wouldn’t willfully admit his team to this year’s tournament, which has an open qualifying structure. With COVID cases shutting down teams throughout the season, the risk of district duals, scheduled to take place the weekend of February 13, is too great with the individual postseason happening the weekend of February 19.

“We have not been shut out of practice so its nice that we have had consistency in that manner but, having schedules change, and competitions get canceled is frustrating,” Lisa said. “We are just trying to stay prepared to wrestle. More competitions would have obviously prepared us better but everyone is in the same situation.”

With districts, regions and the newly implemented super regions set to take place the weekend of February 20 to March 6, it will truly be a victory for the sport if they can move forward with the competitions without any hiccups, making Northampton’s potential match with Parkland this week one to cherish for all involved.
