Liberty girls fall to Bethlehem Catholic in game 2
Liberty’s girls’ basketball team challenged Bethlehem Catholic in its second game in two days, but the Hawks came out on top, 57-44, last Thursday at Liberty.
“We certainly reviewed last night’s game, made some adjustments,” said Liberty coach Andy Wescoe. “Part of last night was I felt we didn’t handle their zone very well. They opened up and played us man and we were doing very well and were very competitive in the game. When they went to their 3-2 and a couple of traps off it, we weren’t prepared.
“I thought we handled it much better tonight and for the most part, got shots. We still hit these droughts, and/or miss a couple easy ones that hurt us, but for the most part, I’m pleased with the effort tonight.”
Eight points, including two threes by Liberty forward Erin Eisenhart in the first quarter contributed to the Hurricanes’ lead after eight minutes.
“It actually feels really great because the past couple games I haven’t been doing as much as I feel like I should’ve been, so to come out tonight against one of our rivals and a really tough game, I feel really good about it,” said Eisenhart, who had four threes, 16 points in total.
Becahi led at the half, 27-25, then scored nine straight points in the opening minutes of the third quarter, including a three by Kourtney Wilson and another by Keyara Walters, who tallied 18 points for the Hawks.
“We were a little bit out of it in the first half, getting tired a little bit,” Walters said. “In the third quarter, we were all hyping it up, and once I fed off other people’s energy and we started working as a team, it made it easy.”
Liberty trailed by seven points at the end of the third quarter, mostly a result of shots not falling and some a result of turnovers.
“We had little, silly turnovers that are unnecessary; little mental breakdowns,” Eisenhart said. “We kind of lost it, and by the time we got to the fourth quarter, it was a little too late to try to get it back.”
Liberty guard Jessica Farrell pulled the Hurricanes to within four on a three-point play to open the fourth quarter, and Alondra Cruz was fouled on a shot which she converted to three more points for the Hurricanes. But Farrell, who was double-teamed most of the second half, could feel the pressure.
“It was really hard to get open. I don’t have my head up sometimes, so I did pick it up and I saw Erin, and then I knew the defense was there but I thought I could get it to her,” said Farrell of a perfect pass to Eisenhart under the basket. “But as a team as a whole, we need to finish. It’s just about making the smart passes and making them to the people who are open to get the best shot.”
This week, Liberty will take on Freedom on Thursday at Freedom and host the Patriots on Saturday. Becahi will travel to Northampton on Thursday and host the Konkrete Kids on Saturday.
