LHS girls sweep NHS
A little more noise from teammates and coaches provided extra help in lifting Liberty’s girls’ swim team to a 108-68 victory over Northampton last Monday.
“It definitely helps,” said Hurricane captain Maddi Drager. “Sometimes during the lulls, it’s kind of weird that it gets as silent as the pool’s ever going to be, but the noise is nice because it makes it feel more normal than usual.”
Individual event winners for the Hurricanes were Sarah Park in the 50 free with a time of 27.34 and the 100 free with a time of 1:01.26, Keller Pooley in diving with a score of 189.08, Brooke Sergent in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.60, Drager in the 500 free with a time of 5:44.11, and Morgan Muller in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:20.34.
“Today was my best 500 of the season,” Drager said, “so I dropped a bunch of time, and I’m really happy with that. Seeing for the first half, the counter didn’t shake at all, which means I need to go faster, that was helpful to keep me going and push as hard as I could.”
After a disappointing finish in the 200 IM in which Drager placed second, the Hurricane senior took a few minutes and pulled herself back to positive thinking to prepare for the 500 free.
“One event doesn’t define your whole day, and I knew I could pull one out to help the team,” she said. “I told myself, for the team, you have to work as hard as you can.”
Liberty won the 200 free relay with the foursome of Sergent, Park, Talia Lehr, and Drager with a time of 1:52.96, and the 400 free relay with a combination of Muller, Monica Bruno, Sydney Taylor, and Drager with a time of 4:19.79.
“I don’t usually anchor because I do swim distance, so sprinting’s not always my strongest, but I felt really good today while I was sprinting, so it was kind of fun to go last and know that I could bring it home,” said Drager, “and I was kind of like the last girl to swim today, which was different.”
Last Thursday, the Liberty girls defeated Northampton again, 91-75.
Park came in first in the 50 free in 27.45.
Sergent, Muller, and Julia Bursch went one, two, three in the 100 free with times of 1:00.91, 1:02.96, and 1:05.93, respectively.
Lehr won the 100 back in 1:07.07, and Park won the 100 breast in 1:19.17.
The Hurricanes will have a bye week this week. Competing only against teams within Northampton County, Bethlehem Catholic doesn’t have a swim team; otherwise, this week would be a meet against the Hawks.
Liberty is scheduled to take on Easton on Feb. 8 and 11.
